MANGO CARE

  How to take care
of mangoes

It is of utmost importance to take good care of your mangoes after receiving them. If more than 1 dozen mangoes are packed in a single carton box without compartments or slots, please follow the following steps to ensure their right ripening and delicious taste:

After opening the box, discard the sachets. Then remove the mangoes from the transit box and expose them to room temperature for 30 minutes so as to dry off their sweat and to normalise their temperature.
*The Konkan Store takes care not to package mangoes in jungle wooden boxes or use any grass or hay as they are not fumigated and can carry bugs in your house.

However, in the case of 1 dozen mango boxes, you can keep the fruits in the box after removing the sachet to prevent excess ripening of the mangoes.

Wipe each mango with a clean damp squeeze cloth. This helps in removing any sap on the mango’s skin, and thus prevents any blackening to occur.

In a cool airy corner of the house, lay the mangoes on a mango-bed. You can prepare the bed by spreading clean paper placed on a solid surface. The mangoes should be systematically arranged in neat rows. Take care not to stack the mangoes on top of each other. Make sure that the mangoes are close and touching each other for better ripening.

You could place a few tomatoes or bananas in the mango cluster to accelerate their ripening. The ethylene gas released from the tomatoes and bananas speeds up ripening in a natural way.

Next, cover the mangoes with a tablecloth or warm linen to create and maintain adequate warmth.

Keep checking and turning the mangoes every two-three days.

To determine if the mangoes have ripened adequately, always press them a little in your hands. This is necessary to do because sometimes a green mango despite not changing its colour does ripen.

In the case of some mangoes, one may notice the appearance of black dots on mango skin. This is a natural process and does not cause any changes in the health or taste of the mangoes.

If you are not able to consume mangoes, you can refrigerate the pulp without adding any preservatives in a food-grade plastic container and consume it as required.
